Summary:
This is the one week of the year when the home of yachting opens its doors to the world and invites them to the ultimate party. Anybody who is anybody within the sailing world descends on Cowes to enjoy a week of full on madness, featuring the finest racing and the finest parties in the yachting community, anybody who is anybody within the yachting fraternity will be here for this celebration of all things yachting related.
The largest regatta in the world is also the oldest and its history can be traced back almost to the roots of yachting itself. In 1826 The Royal Yacht Squadron placed a notice in the Southampton Town and Country Herald advertising a yacht race for a Gold Cup, value £100, to be held on Thursday 10 August. It was to be open to Club yachts of any rig or tonnage; a £2 entry fee was payable. A lot has changed since those early days, but the modern day regatta remains one of the highlights of the yachting world’s calendar and you can expect entrants and attendees from all corners of the globe keen to witness some of the closest racing from a fleet of entrants that boasts a hugely diverse range of craft, from historic day boats to the most sophisticated racing multihull. The regatta stages up to 40 races per day for over 1000 yachts and 8,500 competitors at a time, attracting everyone from enthusiastic amateurs through to Olympic champions and world class professional sailors.
Yet this event is as much about the festive events atmosphere, parties and live entertainment as the competitive racing this extravaganza attracts. Intermingles with seven days of racing is a hugely diverse and often star studded entertainments schedule, culminating with the seasons most anticipated fireworks display on the closing night. A great mix of competitive sailing and social activities for all age groups in the UK summer fine weather holiday season. A one of a kind world class event not to be missed. Pack plenty of sunscreen!
