Summary:
Set up by RORC in 1992, the Commodores' Cup rapidly became established as one of the crown jewels of the British yacht racing scene and its popularity endures to this day. The competition provides an added twist to proceedings by stipulating that yachts must work together in teams and therefore it is not the fastest yacht that secures overall victory, but the fastest team. This can lead to some interesting tactical decisions being made out on the racecourse.
Teams are allowed three boats apiece and all must rate between three-boat team events using the IRC Rating system and is open to boats rated between 1.020 and 1.230 on the IRC measurement system. Teams are divided by nationality and there are often qualifying trials held in various countries in order to select the strongest possible team. Once out on the race course, this multinational event produces some great clashes between the many proud yachting nations out there. Although the racing attracts many big names wishing to participate, the Corinthian spirit is vigorously protected, and the number of Category 3 sailors is restricted to one per boat, except for the boat rated above 1.150 which can have two. This is a great event and a fantastic showpiece for competitive yacht racing and its almost boundless potential for thrills and spills.
